Sophie Ramirez completed a Master of Molecular Chemistry at Paris 6 Pierre-et-Marie-Curie, now a member of Sorbonne Université

What were your experiences before coming to France?

Being a first-generation immigrant student in the U.S. instilled in me a drive to discover the world, and help others who, like me, come from disadvantaged communities. During my studies, I earned a full scholarship to Colorado College and worked part-time jobs that allowed me to partake in unpaid internships and experiences abroad. During my time in college, I was able to participate in scientific research and courses in England, Germany, South Africa, Palestine, Spain and France. International work and research showed me the impact that science can have in the world and the importance of all forms of social activism. This experience influenced me to become a participant member of international activism groups, while also shaping my career to center on the empowerment of disadvantaged communities and women.

What did you study?.

I decided to pursue a graduate degree in Paris, where I found the population to be diverse and aligned with my values. I chose to study Molecular Chemistry due to my continued parallel interests in science and my existent connections with the scientific community in Paris.

What did you do in your free time?

During my time there, I was interested in the refugee and immigrant populations that resided in the city. Therefore, I volunteered on the weekends at Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital using my English, Spanish, and French language skills to provide refugees and immigrants with social support and French language lessons. While I was humbled by each individual story, the many hours spent volunteering, allowed me to realize the positive effect my own cultural flexibility and ability to adapt had on others around me. I was enthusiastic to see that through my open-mindedness and language abilities, I could form bridges cross-culturally and connect with the world around, despite our different backgrounds.

What did you take away from your time in Paris?

My time in France allowed to understand my purpose in life, and the impact I can have via my actions. I currently work in Mexico as an International Project Manager, using my language and interdisciplinary skills throughout multiple departments. As a personal endeavor, I work with women in the company to improve their leadership and communications skills, in order to support their careers as professionals in the field. In the future, I seek to become involved as a diplomat working in social issues internationally, especially those related to health care and women. I believe that my time spent in Paris, played a crucial role in defining my values, and shaping my career decisions and goals. I treasure the memories I made France, and I hope to one day be able to participate in diplomatic work in Paris.
