Many U.S. students who decide to study in France are eligible for various types of financial aid and funding.

Student Loan Options

Federal Loans

As a U.S. student studying abroad for a semester or a year, or pursuing a degree abroad, you may be eligible for federal student aid to cover some of your expenses. The type of aid will depend on your program type and also if your institution in France has an established agreement with the U.S. Department of Education to accept federal student aid.

If you plan to study abroad in France:

Many students are eligible for federal aid that can be available while studying abroad. Students should complete a FAFSA form and also contact the Financial Aid office at their home university  in the U.S. to learn more about their options. Read more here about accessing U.S. federal financial aid for study abroad.

If you plan to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree in a French institution:

As of Summer 2020, there were 16 French institutions that had agreements with the U.S. Department of Education, 11 institutions have agreements allowing them to accept federal student aid for U.S. students enrolled in their degree programs. See the list below, and read more here

The 11 institutions that are ‘Eligible’ will work with enrolled students to accept U.S. federal student loans. You’ll see that 5 of these institutions have the ‘Deferment Only’ status. This means that these institutions will allow their enrolled U.S. students with existing loan debts to defer loan payments for the duration of enrollment.

We recommend checking the list of International Schools that Participate in Federal Student Loan Programs (an Excel sheet available on this website) regularly, since the list is updated quarterly.

More information and details about accessing federal student aid can be found on the website of the Federal Student Aid Office of the U.S. Department of Education.

Private Loans

Some students decide do independent research on private loan providers. Some banks in the US and France also may offer educational student loans for U.S. students who are studying abroad or pursuing degrees in French institutions.

Campus France USA is not able to provide any council on loans or financial aid, the information above is for reference only. Please contact your institution in France, possible loan providers, or the US Federal Student Aid Office directly for additional information.

Scholarships

In addition to student loans, students should research the wide variety of need- and merit-based scholarships and grants available to them for studying abroad or pursuing degree programs abroad.

Campus Bourses

Campus France manages a searchable platform for scholarships available to international students in France. You can search by your field and your nationality on the platform Campus Bourses.

Tip: We recommend searching in both French and in English, as some scholarship entries only appear in one language.

Grants, Scholarships, and Fellowships

Campus France USA has also compiled a list of resources on our Grants, Scholarships, and Fellowships page.
